Professor Kurt Langfeld appointed as new Head of School
The University is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Kurt Langfeld as the new Head of the School of Mathematics.
Professor Langfeld will be joining us from the University of Liverpool, where he is current Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Professor of Theoretical Physics.
His main research area is that of fundamental particle physics, but his research covers over a wide range encompassing numerical simulations of quantum field theories and statistical systems. As such, his appointment will lead to many opportunities for interdisciplinary connections at Leeds.
Professor Langfeld has published over 100 scientific papers and is a frequent presenter at conferences and seminars. He is also strongly committed to excellence in teaching and the student experience and is a trustee of the University of Liverpool Mathematics Specialist school.
He has substantial academic leadership experience and also has been actively engaged in outreach and public engagement of science.
Professor Langfeld said: “I am very excited at the opportunity to join and lead the School of Mathematics at Leeds, working with the staff and students of the School to deliver our academic and career ambitions and to establish the School firmly as one of the UK’s leading maths departments.
“I also look forward to working with the new Executive Dean and other colleagues in the new Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) and more broadly with colleagues across the university where interdisciplinary activity seems to be actively encouraged in research and education.”
The current Acting Dean of EPS, Professor Steve Scott, said: “I am delighted we have secured such an experienced academic leader and leading academic for this post.
“Kurt has a world-class research activity that will augment existing activity and bring new strengths to Leeds. He is a dynamic but consultative leader with a clear vision of a ‘top 5’ Maths School built on excellence and collegiality.”
Professor Langfeld is expected to take up his post on or around 1st April 2020.
