Profile

Dr Costas Loizou is a Lecturer in Mathematics at the SWJTU-Leeds Joint School, a transnational education (TNE) partnership between the University of Leeds and Southwest Jiaotong University, one of the University’s key strategic partners in China.

He joined the University as a Curriculum Redefined Transformative Educator in 2022 and is now Director of Year 1 for the Joint School. Responsibilities

  • Director of Year 1 SWJTU-Leeds Joint School
  • Module leader for XJFY0315 Mathematics
  • Module leader and designer for XJFY0400 Scientific Problem Solving & LISS1060 Computational Thinking

Research interests

His mathematial research area is in the Analysis of Partial Differential Equations and in particular, hyperbolic PDEs with multiplicities and generalised functions. Costas has studied hyperbolic equations with multiplicities and irregular coefficients, seeking well-posedness results in the sense of very weak solutions.

His pedagogical research focuses on empowering TNE students to thrive in an English-medium instruction (EMI) curriculum by integrating problem-solving, disciplinary language development, and a strong sense of belonging to Leeds.
