Harshita Garg

Harshita Garg is a Postgraduate Researcher at the University of Leeds in the School of Civil Engineering.

Harshita decided to pursue a PhD at the University of Leeds after completing a Masters in International Construction Management and Engineering. The expertise of Leeds’ faculty sparked her interest and ignited a new passion for research, encouraging her to explore subjects such as artificial intelligence, structural health monitoring and cost management.  

I aim to revolutionise the monitoring and maintenance of concrete structures, making them more resilient and sustainable.

“My research involves analysing data from case studies with embedded sensors in concrete structures,” said Harshita. “I developed an AI-based methodology to analyse and interpret this sensor data, providing insights that assist decision-makers in implementing cost-effective maintenance strategies. This practical approach ensures the real-world applicability and effectiveness of my research.  

“I aim to revolutionise the monitoring and maintenance of concrete structures, making them more resilient and sustainable. My research introduces an innovative AI-based methodology to analyse sensor data for predicting the performance of concrete structures. This approach – combined with a strategic financial model – aims to reduce costs and enhance safety, ultimately contributing to the sustainability and longevity of concrete infrastructure.”  

 

Academic support 

While Harshita has worked hard to achieve her goals, she’s also grateful for the support of Leeds faculty during her studies. “My supervisors are an outstanding team of experts. Prof. Basheer and Dr. Sreejith specialise in concrete structures, durability, and structural health monitoring, while Prof. Cohn focuses on AI and Prof. Sarhosis integrates AI with SHM. Their diverse expertise aligns perfectly with my research.  

The community of researchers at Leeds, including the Leeds Doctoral College, is incredibly supportive and inclusive. They provide regular seminars, workshops and networking opportunities.

Harshita has received support from other sources as well. “I am part of the Materials and Structures Group. This group organises seminars and invites speakers, providing valuable learning opportunities. Presenting my work to the group allowed me to receive constructive feedback, which has been instrumental in refining my research.”  

 

Going forward 

Harshita’s ambitions remain high once her PhD is complete. “After completing my PhD, I have secured a postdoctoral position at Heriot-Watt University. My long-term goal is to become a lecturer and eventually a professor, contributing to academia and advancing research in civil engineering and the built environment.”
