Amélie Davies

Amélie Davies is currently studying Mathematics MMath, BSc at the University of Leeds.

Why Leeds?

Amélie decided to study at Leeds after visiting the campus at an open day. She said: “The University of Leeds was the first campus I visited, and even without having anything to compare it to I already knew I loved it. After visiting universities all over the country I knew that Leeds was the place for me, because of just how comfortable and excited I felt when I first visited.”

“The location of the campus, as well as all the different facilities and study spaces, was also something that stood out to me. I found the staff extremely friendly, the course details aligned with my goals, and I could see myself really succeeding. I’ve found that my first impression was absolutely spot on, and I’ve absolutely loved my time here so far!”

Developing skills in mathematics

Amélie chose Maths because she really enjoys the subject. She said: “There’s just something so satisfying to me about solving a problem and getting it right (especially if you’ve spent a long time at it!).”

“I also considered my future plans, as maths is a really versatile and useful degree which opens many doors. I decided to do the integrated master's because I want to keep exploring interesting maths and because it will be excellent for my professional development.”

Amélie is in the fourth year of her degree and has studied a wide variety of modules. She said: “I think that Mathematical Methods has been my favourite module so far! The content was really interesting and has really helped me in many other modules. It was interesting to see all the different ways we have developed techniques to solve and approximate problems, and also to use these techniques.”

“I’m also really enjoying Entropy at the moment as it's such a fascinating topic, and totally different to anything I’ve studied before in terms of concept, but still really familiar mathematically. I’ve also definitely taken advantage of the 20 free credits each year and done some really fun discovery modules, like German and History of Science.”

Joining dance societies

Amélie has embraced student life, attending events organised by the student union and joining societies. She said: “I love how vibrant and energetic campus is. Being able to go from the beautiful green space of Hyde Park to on campus in just 2 minutes is absolutely a plus, and I really like how close campus is to the city centre.”

“There’s definitely a sense of community on campus, and the events and experiences run by the union are fantastic. The variety and range of societies are enormous and there’s plenty to get involved with. I’ve had the chance to try things which I’d never even heard of before!”

“I’ve really got involved with the dance societies - I’m a part of the ballet, modern dance and Irish dance societies! I love the classes each week, the teachers are fantastic, and the class atmosphere is so fun and friendly. There are also loads of performances over the year, from Christmas shows to LUU Inter Dance and even St. Patrick’s Day!”

Future career goals

Like many university students, Amélie is not quite certain of what she wants to do yet. She said: “I would be really interested in further study or research, maybe doing a PhD. I’m also quite interested in maths education and space, so might end up doing something along those routes. However, I’m absolutely certain that I want to keep doing maths!”
