Profile

David has been a Senior Teaching Fellow, and latterly an Associate Professor, in the School of Civil Engineering since 2012. For 28 years prior to this he worked in industry as a Consulting Structural Engineer, the final 6 years of which was spent as a Technical Director in the WYG group.

During David's time working in industry he headed up a team of over 25 Structural Engineers and technical support staff delivering the Structural and Civil design on a number of significant building projects.

Major projects delivered by David include the £500m Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham and the £300m Pinderfields and Pontefract Hospital, Wakefield and the £145m Target Station 2 spallation neutron source at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxford

David also has a track record of successfully leading the Civil and Structural design of projects in a variety of other sectors including education, leisure, research and stadia. Examples of some of these projects include the Edge leisure complex at the University of Leeds, the redevelopment of Headingley cricket stadium in Leeds, the Welcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics in Oxford and numerous school and higher education buildings.

Since 2018 David has been Director of Admissions in the School of Civil Engineering

Student education

David is structural design champion in the department of Civil Engineering here at the University of Leeds and is currently Director of Admissions. David is also Deputy Director of Student Education (Admissions and Assessment) within the school. His main teaching roles are in connection with the Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 IDP’s (Integrated Design Projects) for which he is module leader. David is also the IDP thread leader covering the IDP’s at all levels within the school. He teaches steel design on the Level 3 Structural Design 2 module and Level 5/MSc Advanced Steel and Composite Design merged module. David is also module leader for the Level 3 Construction Site Fieldcourse (Constructionarium) module.
