Profile
Biography
Justin is a leading figure in architectural education and is Co-Chair of the Standing Committee of Schools of Architecture (SCOSA). Justin leads working groups in SCOSA investigating dual-award educational programmes and fire & life safety teaching, and participates in educational reform processes involving RIBA, ARB and the Health & Safety Executive. Justin is the principal liaison with ARB and RIBA for the School and is a member of the RIBA Yorkshire Region education committee, and a council member of the West Yorkshire Society of Architects.
Justin has led the establishment of accredited architectural programmes in the University, including the groundbreaking MEng, BEng Architecture which integrates architecture, civil & structural and building services and is the first course in the UK to offer a combined triple professional qualification, being accredited by ARB, RIBA, JBM and CIBSE. The new Master of Architecture/ Master of Engineering qualifications are the first in the UK to achieve accreditation under new ARB Standards and allow students to graduate and progress to Chartered membership in any of these disciplines without further study. This new qualification is an unprecedented integration at Masters level of construction industry disciplines.
Justin is a design focused architect with over 25 years of experience in the construction industry, working on a range of commercial office and residential projects and winning design awards in the process. Justin's interest in the detailed technical as well as artistic elements of design were important contributors to his success. He was later able to form excellent collaborative networks within a strongly multidisciplinary company. This led to further award winning and technically challenging buildings, in the U.K, and work in Dubai, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, China and New Zealand. A working environment where specialist engineering expertise was not just available but often in the same room had a transformative effect on Justin's views on professional learning, suggesting a more integrated approach was desirable. Justin’s work in education has promoted expertise and understanding across disciplines.
Justin is the design architect for the Chapeltown Cohousing Community in Leeds and has research interests in the procurement of community projects.
