Profile

Biography

Justin is a design focused architect with over 25 years of experience in the construction industry. He has led design teams in a variety of building projects in the private and public sector, winning awards for his work in the process. Since joining the University in 2010, Justin has concentrated on applying his professional expertise to teaching on the Architectural programmes within the School of Civil Engineering.

Justin has led the redesign of architectural programmes in the University, including the groundbreaking MEng, BEng Architecture which integrates architecture, civil & structural and building services and is the first course in the UK to offer a combined triple professional qualification, being accredited by ARB, RIBA, JBM and CIBSE. He is currently leading the design and accreditation process for new Master of Architecture/ Master of Engineering qualifications under new ARB Standards which will allow students to graduate and progress to Chartered membership in any of these disciplines without further study. This new qualification is an unprecedented integration at Masters level of construction industry disciplines.

As well as leading the design, implementation and management of these programmes, Justin is the principal liaison with ARB and RIBA for the School, and is also a Council member of the Standing Committee of Schools of Architecture (SCOSA). Justin leads working groups in SCOSA investigating dual-award educational programmes and fire & life safety teaching, and is invited to participate in consultation events involving RIBA, ARB and the Health & Safety Executive. He is a member of the RIBA Yorkshire Region education committee, and a council member of the West Yorkshite Society of Architects.

Justin has worked on a range of commercial office and residential projects, winning design awards in the process. Justin's interest in the detailed technical as well as artistic elements of design were important contributors to his success. He was later able to form excellent collaborative networks within a strongly multidisciplinary company. This led to further award winning and technically challenging buildings, in the U.K, and work in Dubai, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and China. A working environment where specialist engineering expertise was not just available but often in the same room had a transformative effect on Justin's views on professional learning, suggesting a more integrated approach was desirable.

Justin is the design architect for the Chapeltown Cohousing Community in Leeds and has research interests in the procurement of community projects.
