Samuel Curtis

Profile

I am a first year PhD student in the School of Civil Engineering, working under Dr Mateusz Bocian and Prof Nikolaos Nikitas. My project will focus on gaining a deeper understanding of the interactions between crowds of pedestrians and vibration-prone structures such as footbridges. I am currently working on producing a new model of human stepping behaviour which includes the tendency to synchronise spontaneously with neighbours. My previous background is in Mathematics, having completed my Masters degree in Mathematics in 2024.

Research interests

  • Human-structure interaction
  • Human gait biomechanics including the spontaneous synchronisation of footsteps and gait adaptations for balancing on moving structures
  • Statistical modelling of stepping behaviour
  • Crowd simulation and visually-guided locomotion
  • Footbridge design and modelling

Qualifications

  • MMath (Mathematics) from University of Oxford (2024)
