Research interests

Professor Dongsheng Wen obtained his DPhil in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford, after his BEng in Aeronautics (1997) and MSc in Thermophysics (2000) from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Tsinghua University respectively. Prior to his current Chair position, he had worked in various academic positions at the Queen Mary University of London.

He is a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), a Fellow of Energy Institute (FEI), a Fellow of Institute of Nanotechnology (FION), a Chartered Engineer (CEng), a Chartered Energy Engineer, and a Chartered Scientist (CSci).

Prof. Wen’s research covers a wide spectrum of nanotechnology and engineering science, centered around applied nanomaterials for energy applications, including:

  • Nanofluids technology: engineering stable nanoparticle dispersions and investigating their applications. Current research topics includes:

- Microwave assisted hydrothermal production of functional nanomaterials;

- Synthesis, formulation and characterisation of novel nanofluids;

- Single phase and multiphase heat trasnfer (boiling, evaporation and condensation) of nanofluids;

- Direct absorption nanofluids for efficient solar thermal systems;

- Nanoparticle based molten salts for solar energy storage

  • Nanotechnology for oil and gas: developing multifunctional nanomaterials with tailored properties for reservoir diagnosis, characterization, enhanced oil recovery, controlled delivery of chemicals and asphaltene control. Current projects include:

- Multifunctional nanomaterials design and transport in porous media;

- Interfacial and rheological properties of nano-dispersions under reservoir-like conditions;

- Controlled delivery of surfactants for enhanced oil recovery;

- Functional nanoparticles for enhanced oil recovery;

- Nanoparticle based innovative drilling fluids;

- Nanoparticle sensors (pressure, temperature, stress etc) for reservoir characterisation and diagnosis;

  • Multiscale modelling: extending from molecular dynamics (MD) simulation for single droplets evaporation and interactions of two and multiple nanoparticles, to two-fluids modelling for engineering problems. Current projects:

 - Molecular dynamic simulation of nanoscale transport phenomena;

 - Multiscale modelling of flow and heat transfer at the pore scale (MD-CFD)

 - Multiscale modelling of fluidisation process (LBM_CFD)

  • Multiphase flow and heat transfer: including flow boiling in microgeometries, heat pipe technology, cryogenic flow and heat transfer, and phase change materials for energy storage

 - Multiphase flow and heat transfer in cryogenic systems

 - Innovative loop heat pipe technology

  • Nanofuel technology: investigating the oxidation, ignition and combustion of energetic nanoparticles and their energy applications.  Current project:

 - Oxidation and ignition study of alloy nanoparticles (AlCu, AlZn etc)

  • Nanowave technology: investigating the interaction of nanoparticles with an external wave (i.e., light, ultrasound, electromagnetic waves) and its associated biomedical applications. Current project:

 - Multifuncational capsules design and cargo release mechanism;
