What is the name of the company you work for and what do they do?

Unity Technologies is a software development company, creator of a widely used game engine. It allows the user to create experiences in 2D, 3D, VR and AR across a large range of platforms via the Unity editor.

What is your role within the company?

I am a Software Development Test Intern in their Release Quality Assurance team.

Can you give me an insight into a typical day?

I work on different things throughout the week, so there’s some nice variation between the days. Typical tasks would be testing the Unity editor through different means, investigating and logging bugs and issues or developing and working on ongoing projects.

What do you enjoy the most and do you get involved in any interesting projects?

I really enjoy the atmosphere of the workplace here. I have met a lot of great people and learned a lot from them too. Plus, there is cooked breakfast on Wednesdays, monthly game nights and Friday socials! There is always something to look forward to each week.

I’ve also had a lot of fun with projects I’ve taken part in this year. We have experienced developing and building small test projects across multiple platforms, worked on creating a statistics report with other interns and delved into learning the basics of how to automate testing while creating a bowling game with behaviour driven development, among many other new and interesting things.

I feel as if the team have really tried to accommodate as many learning experiences as they could for us during this year.

Why did you want to undertake a year in industry?

I was hoping to gain more practical work experience and explore possible jobs associated with this degree. I was uncertain exactly what I wanted to do after university and felt that a year in industry was one of the best ways to explore this.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned during the year?

To have more confidence in my own work and the ability to manage myself and my time in a workplace environment – both things I was rather timid about initially.

Has your experience given you a better idea of what you want to do for a career?

It has. While I’m open to exploring more areas that this degree could take me, the investigative nature of quality assurance and testing here at Unity has been something I have come to greatly enjoy and I could see myself returning to similar roles in the industry in the future.
