Sam Gilluley studied MPhys Physics at the University of Leeds

Sam Gilluley

Why did you choose to study physics?

Physics has always been a great interest of mine, whether it is the stars and how they form, or how seemingly unimportant everyday events occur.

Having the chance to study and take part in current areas of physics research was an opportunity I could not miss.

What attracted you to the University of Leeds?

From the first time I visited the University of Leeds, I got a great feeling from both the campus and city, and I loved how close they were to each other.

The department was very welcoming when I attended one of the Open Days and it was clearly a great place to study, not only in terms of quality of research, but also the quality of student life.

Did you visit us on an Open Day? Did you find the Open Day helpful in making your decision?

I visited on an Open Day and also on a post-application visit day. I found that the Open Day was very informative, and the student helpers and staff were very good at providing information about the School of Physics and Astronomy, and the University as a whole.

It also gave me a chance to look around the department, and see some of the research areas.

What do you enjoy the most about your course?

I particularly enjoy the research-led teaching at Leeds. It gives you a chance to get involved in current investigations in the real scientific community.

I also enjoy the practical laboratory modules, which provide you with a lot of independence and help to develop a wide set of skills outside of the classroom/lecture environment.

How would you describe student life at Leeds?

Unbeatable! There is always something going on in Leeds, whether it is at the University or somewhere in and around the city.

There are also hundreds of clubs and societies to get involved in, with something for every interest.

Are you involved in any clubs or societies?

I have been involved in Physics Society since I came to the University of Leeds, and I was also on the committee in my third year.

I would recommend this to everyone who comes to Leeds as it’s a great way to meet people and socialise.

I have also been involved in Snowriders and the University Squash Club.

What is Leeds as a city like?

Leeds might be small compared to other cities, but there is a lot more going on compared to its larger neighbours.

There's always something going on, whether it be music, drinking, sport, theatre, art, or anything else you can think of!

Being in the north, it also means everyone is friendly and we actually talk to each other on public transport!

What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to the School of Physics and Astronomy?

Come on down to one of the Open Days and see what its like to study in a great environment in a great department. You can also check out the School's social media for videos and the latest news, events and information.

What are your plans for the future?

I am going to be a teacher, teaching secondary physics in Manchester. Who knows, I may even come back to Leeds at some point in the future!
