Why did you decide to study at the University of Leeds?

Not only is Leeds fairly close to my hometown, which came as a bonus, it provided me with a course that isn’t found at many universities. The course allows me to pursue the two subjects that I both love and enjoy. In addition, Leeds is one of the best ranked universities in the UK and is a campus university that still has the city vibe, since it’s just minutes away from the city centre.

What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University and why?

So far, I’ve especially enjoyed the maths aspect of my course. It’s been interesting learning about different equations, which can actually be applied to the biology side of my course and used in real life. Furthermore, my course also gave me access to an optional tutorials module. This module provided me with support and advice on essay writing and presentations which I found very useful as it helped to give me more confidence.

Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed so far?

Recently, in the practical genetics module, we synthesised DNA in one of the lab sessions and then the following week, we analysed the DNA using a method called gel electrophoresis, which then enabled us to determine the disease risk of an inherited disorder.  

What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?       

Leeds is a large lively city with an infinite amount of opportunities, but still has a friendly community feel. The number of bars, cafes and shops that offer student discounts is endless and what’s even better is how close it all is. The city centre has a great shopping centre too and there are also museums, theatres, fancy bars and a huge variety of different restaurants to try out.

What are your ambitions for the future?

My ambition is to hopefully one day work in the biology field in a laboratory, performing experiments and conducting research, but paths often change and so I may look into finance/banking careers.

What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?

Leeds offered me a module that focused on purely developing my presentation skills and essay writing. This strengthened my confidence, which will be beneficial when giving speeches or attending job interviews. Also, the discovery module system at Leeds provides an opportunity to study modules beyond my course, allowing me flexibility in my studies, which could aid me to pursue different career paths

What would you say to students coming to do the same course?

It’s challenging and tough at times like any course, but it’s interesting and taking a joint honours means you have more options choosing your modules and enables you to specialise in either field so your options are open.
