Dr Andrew Pimm

Dr Andrew Pimm

Profile

Andrew Pimm is a Research Fellow in the School of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Leeds. He joined the university in November 2015.

Andrew's research centres on green steel and energy storage. He is investigating the techno-economics of a range of steelmaking technologies, including hydrogen direct reduction of iron and fuel preheating using high temperature heat pumps.

While at Leeds, he has also developed models of energy demand and energy storage within cities; investigated the potential to use electricity storage for peak shaving and determined the effect of time-of-use tariffs on demand peaks; investigated the economics of energy storage to large enterprises and housing communities; and studied the greenhouse gas emissions arising from energy storage operation and electric vehicle charging.

Andrew has a strong background in mechanical engineering and computational analysis. He previously worked at the University of Nottingham, where he developed innovative new designs of energy storage systems and floating offshore wind turbines. He was a founding member of the Offshore Energy and Storage (OSES) conference series.

He gives lectures and supervision to students across all levels of higher education, and regularly presents his work at international conferences.
