Profile
Dr Samuel Adu-Amankwah is a lecturer in Civil Engineering and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). He has worked in the higher education sector since 2011. During this period, he has taught modules in advanced concrete technology, materials engineering, construction technology, and surveying related subjects drawing from over 5 years’ industrial experience. Before joining University of Leeds, Sam worked as resident engineer on major civil engineering schemes including construction of the Baba Yara Stadium for the 2008 African Cup of Nations and remodelling of commercial centres. As project engineer at RecordRSS, York, he worked on a number of design and build recreational schemes for councils across Yorkshire and the Midlands.
Dr Adu-Amankwah took his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Science and Technology, Ghana, graduating with First Class Honours in 2006. Between 2008 – 2009, he studied for a masters degree in Structural Engineering at the University of Leeds. Following, he worked in the construction industry for three years before starting a part-time PhD at Leeds where he also worked as Graduate Teaching Assistant. Throughout this period, he used a range of methodologies to examine the properties of cementitious materials at multi-scale. He has rich experience of working across a number of national and international research laboratories including Heidelberg Technology Centre, Germany. He currently supervises four PhD researchers sponsored by the China Scholarship Council/ U. Leeds, EPSRC CDT GREEN, Highways England through an EPSRC CASE award and the Nigerian government’s Tertiary Education Trust Fund. He has over 15 journal and conference publications, with his research contributing to the imminent BS EN 197-5. Portland-composite cement CEM II/C-M and Composite cement CEM VI standard. Dr Adu-Amankwah was awarded one of the seed-corn grants of the IStrucE to develop cement formulations for concrete 3D printing, whose work is supported by a Laidlaw Scholar. He is a reviewer for the Cement and Concrete Research, Construction and Building Materials and the ICE’s Advances in Cement Research journals.

Research interests
My research interests are around sustainable construction materials and technologies, durability of concrete based infrastructure and digitization in construction including automation. I am particularly interested in understanding how the multi-scale properties of materials i.e. chemical and physical influence performance as well as their manipulations. My ongoing research activities include service life assessment of critical infrastructure, circularity of construction materials with emphasis on application of advanced imaging techniques to characterise wastes for reuse as well as developing next generation materials for digital fabrication.
