Dr Chris Halcrow


I obtained my PhD from the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Nick Manton. I then had a teaching stinit at Wadham College, Oxford, where I was a Stipendary Lecturer. I taught around ten courses ranging from Differential Equations to Statistics. For a change of scene, I then went to the Institute of Modern Physics in Lanzhou, China where I was a postdoc, working with Sven Bjarke Gudnason. I recently received an Early Careers Fellowship from the Leverhulme Trust, which I am taking up here at Leeds. I originally hail from the Shetland Islands, a beautiful holiday spot in the north of Scotland.

I recently presented an “Introduction to Solitons” for the LMS. It’s available here, and serves as a good introduction to my research area. I also co-run the Solitons at Work research network. More details of this network can be found at www.solitonsatwork.net .

Research interests

The main focus of my research has been on the Skyrme model. This describes nuclei as localised lumps of energy whose existence and stability is due to the topology of the system at hand. These are known as Skyrmions (or topological solitons, more broadly). To make a connection with nuclear physics, one must take these Skyrmions - which are classical objects - into the quantum world. To do this, we need to understand how these Skyrmions morph and deform. They are highly symmetric objects and as such their deformations are often described by interesting manifolds with much symmetry. I have studied (and done quantum mechanics) on a selection of these manifolds. My next aim is to understand the scattering of Skyrmions and whether their interesting symmetries and dynamics lead to any unexpected predictions in scattering data.
