Larisa-Adriana Darolti is studying Mathematics, Environmental Science and Chemistry in her Natural Sciences programme. She chose to study at the University of Leeds because of the flexibility of the course, the high employability rate and the opportunity for her to undertake a placement year in industry.
Larisa enjoys living in Leeds. She adds, “As one of the largest cities in the UK, there are a lot of career opportunities available. Leeds also offers an amazing student life, with pubs, parks, shops and museums. I enjoy living in such a diverse city!”
Larisa would like to do academic research in Applied Mathematic but because of the interdisciplinary approach of the Natural Sciences, it will “prepare you for a wide range of careers and also gives you the opportunity to work and build a career in a wide range of sciences”.

Asif is a Natural Sciences (MNatSc) student and chose to study chemistry and biochemistry, with a major focus on chemistry.
He said "These two subjects interlink especially well and the teaching provided many examples of chemistry within a biological context and vice versa. The course itself allows a wide variety of scientific disciplines to be chosen and studied, and therefore is capable of providing a range of knowledge and understanding, whilst also enabling me to maintain an interest in disparate fields."
As the course is taught as a four year integrated masters, meaning a practical based research project forms a large part of the final year, Asif has been involved in boundary-pushing research.
He said "I spent my final year on the course in a research lab in the School of Chemistry, working on chemically labelling a protein of interest to the research group. The fluorescent label was used to observe the interaction between the protein and its interacting partner. Working on live research projects during the masters year gave me a great insight into the workings of a research group and the types of research that occur, whilst also being fun and exciting."

Oliver Bramley is a Natural Sciences student. He did Chemistry, Mathematics and Biochemistry. He chose Natural Sciences because the programme gave him the opportunity to try three different subjects at degree level.
Oliver plans to complete a Masters degree at the University of Oxford before returning to Leeds to complete a PhD in Computational Chemistry. During his time studying at Leeds, Oliver has learnt to work independently. The broad nature of Natural Sciences means self-motivation has been integral to completing work on time and to a good quality.

Aisha is a Natural Sciences (MNatSc, BSc) student and is studying Chemistry and Biochemistry. She was attracted to the University of Leeds through the research-led teaching and laboratory facilities, as well as the high level of flexibility within the Natural Sciences course.
The Natural Sciences course allows you to design your degree to suit your career aspirations and interests and maintain a breadth of scientific subjects. Aisha said, “The best part of the course is the lack of restrictive scientific learning. Studying Natural Sciences has allowed me to explore a variety of scientific concepts in chemistry, biochemistry and environmental science - many of which are intertwined.”
“The course has equipped me with organisational skills, due to the busy nature of the course. I have also improved my interpersonal and communication skills through general university experiences, such as working as a student ambassador and undergraduate representative for the School of Chemistry Athena Swan committee. Athena Swan is a charter committed to promoting gender equality in the STEM sector. I am very passionate about implementing equal opportunities by addressing institutional discrimination and intersectionality.
I also enjoy living in Leeds. It’s a large city, with a lot to offer. The city centre itself is full of shopping centres, entertainment and activities, so you don’t have to travel very far to find something fun to do.”

Student Kim Spijkers-Shaw tells us about her experience studying Natural Sciences at the University of Leeds. She did Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in her first year, and focussed on Physics and Mathematics in her last three years. This meant that she had to do all of the core Physics modules and with an Applied Mathematics focus including Fluid dynamics.
Kim finds that most of the important topics of research in modern science branch over more than one of the classic sciences, “so researchers require a good knowledge of more than one”. She added "I think it is very important that research scientists who are working together have at least a base understanding of other sciences besides their specialism. Interdisciplinary research is key to tackling the big questions in science today.
