What is the name of the company you work for and what do they do?

I work for General Electric. The company is specialised in many different fields such as Oil and Gas, Transportations, Renewable Energy, Healthcare and the one I'm involved in is Aviation.

What is your role within the company?

My role is a Quality intern. The benefit of the quality department is there're always opportunities to get involved with other departments.

Can you please give me an insight into a typical day?

My typical day starts with a daily team meeting to recap all the progress on the ongoing projects/issues within the department. My day then progress on working on my individual projects such as VSM, Value Stream Map, which my role in   the project is to draw a timeline of a certain engine component while in the repair area in the facility, and compare the total worked hours against the scheduled hours.

What do you enjoy the most and do you get involved in any interesting projects?

I mostly enjoy going around the facility and communicating with employees while we discuss current ongoing issues that concern the quality department. As well as going around looking for engine components and learning more about their functions. Some projects I get involved in are interesting, mainly if it's a long-lasting project that I could be involved in improving the process

Why did you want to undertake a year in industry?

The reason I decided to undertake a year in industry is to enhance my interpersonal skills, as well as gaining a more hands on experience in a world leading engineering company. Therefore, my chances of finding a specialised job in an engineering company will be improved.

What do you think you have got out of this experience so far?

From this placement experience I understood how the life of an employee is totally different than a student’s and how I can benefit from it. I also learnt how to be more responsible with my actions and not to be afraid to communicate with different departments to gain what’s required from me.

Do you have any tips and advice to current students thinking of undertaking a year in industry?

I would highly recommend any student who has the chance to undertake a year in industry to go ahead and accept the challenge. Many skills that you’re unaware you have will be discovered, as well as enhancing your current skills majorly. Most importantly the experience itself is fascinating.
