Alexander Kimbley

Profile

After completing both my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of Leeds, both in mathematics, it felt natural to pursue a PhD in my preferred field at the University. This led to undergoing postgraduate research studies under the supervision of Prof. Stephen Griffiths and Prof. David Hughes on equatorial instabilities in planetary atmospheres.

Research interests

My research is oriented towards the fluid dynamics of planetary atmospheres. Currently I am working towards understanding the linear stability of an axisymmetric, stratified shear flow with background rotation and magnetic field where both the magnetohydrostatic and Boussinesq approximations are assumed to be valid. Interestingly, the research has found many links to the well known Magneto-rotational instability (MRI).
