Sarah Binns studied BSc Mathematics at the University of Leeds

Sarah Binns

Why did you choose to study mathematics?

I loved maths at college and it's a subject I was always quite good at. A few of my friends had previously studied for a maths degree and they really enjoyed it, so I thought why not!

What attracted you to the University of Leeds?

I had visited a few friends here and had the best time!

I was interested in doing a study abroad year, and the opportunities at the University of Leeds are some of the best I had come across, so that played a big part in my decision.

The courses are fantastic, the campus is beautiful and the city is one of the best in the North!

Did you visit us on an Open Day?

I didn't visit the University of Leeds on an Open Day, but I went to a post-application visit day at the School of Mathematics and I really enjoyed my day.

The staff and students were really helpful when answering my questions. It definitely helped me to make the decision that the University of Leeds was the best choice for me.

What do you enjoy the most about your course?

I have a lot of free reign in choosing areas of mathematics that I want to study (and avoiding the bits I don't!). I've been able to take modules in areas of mathematics that really interest me over the course of my degree, including the maths behind music and how mathematics is taught within the education sector.

How would you describe student life at the University of Leeds?

It’s the best. If I could continue living the student life after I graduate I would!

The clubs, bars, restaurants and student nights have been voted as some of the best in the country and there are plenty to choose from, so no matter what your interest there is always something to get involved with.

Leeds is also really affordable, so your loan stretches far enough to be able to go out and really experience student life whilst you are here.

Are you involved in any clubs or societies?

I am a member of the Maths Society and Stage Musicals Society. I have choreographed and helped direct shows whilst I have been at university alongside being the treasurer in my second year.

Being part of Stage Musicals Society has made my university experience and I couldn’t recommend joining a society enough. There are so many to choose from and you can get together with likeminded people to enjoy doing something different.

Throw yourself in and you definitely make some amazing friends and memories.

Societies also give you a great break and distraction from work - especially in 3rd year!

What is Leeds as a city like?

Leeds is great! There are loads of shops, restaurants, bars, clubs and they are all just down the road from the University campus.

The buses and trains are also cheap and reliable making getting around and home really easy.

Leeds is affordable to live and it's voted one of the best cities in the North - however I would definitely say in the country.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to the School of Mathematics?

I would say don't worry if you haven't taken further mathematics at A-Level. I didn't study further mathematics and I wasn't behind in the course as the first six weeks got me up to speed.

I would also advise students to ask any questions they have, because you will feel much happier when you are making your decision.

What are your plans for the future?

My plan at the moment is to graduate, complete my PGCE next year and then potentially complete a masters degree.
