Maria Robson studied BSc Mathematics at the University of Leeds

Maria Robson

Why did you choose to study mathematics?

Throughout school and college, I knew that I wanted to take a mathematics based career route so for me it was a no brainer for me to study mathematics at university!

I have always enjoyed the problem solving aspects and the fact that it is the only universal language in incredible.

What attracted you to the University of Leeds?

As soon as I visited the University of Leeds I knew it was where I wanted to study - the atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for.

I love that it is a campus university but with most of the accommodation based off-site so in an evening you can escape the studying, relax and enjoy university life.

Did you visit us on an Open Day? Did you find the Open Day helpful in making your decision?

I visited the University twice before making Leeds my firm choice. Both visits were very helpful because it meant I had the chance to ask any questions and explore the university to get a feel what the next few years were going to be like.

What do you enjoy the most about your course?

I find that maths is quite a social subject because a lot of students complete their work in groups. I prefer doing this to working on my own because everyone has their own strengths but when you put them together, it makes it so much easier to understand the work we are doing.

How would you describe student life at Leeds?

Leeds is known for being a good night out and it hasn’t disappointed so far. There are so many different places you can go for a night out depending on what type of music you are in to.

However, for people who aren’t as into the clubbing scene, there are still all the shops, cinemas, the museum and plenty of places for walks only a short bus ride away.

Are you involved in any clubs or societies?

I have been a member of the Maths Society over the past two years and I have gained so many memories.

In February, we had an organised trip to Amsterdam - this was such a huge experience for me and I loved every second.

What is Leeds as a city like?

Leeds is a huge city and there is something for everyone. The range of shops in the town centre is amazing!

Headingley is also a lovely part of Leeds as it is very student based. It has everything a student would need from the supermarkets to the bars. A lot of the accommodations are situated close by too.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to the School of Mathematics?

If maths is something you enjoy doing and have a passion for then I would definitely apply to the School of Mathematics.

It has recently been refurbished so it contains state of the art equipment and has plenty of space for both private and group study.

What are your plans for the future?

I don’t have a set career plan at the moment, I just want to carry on doing what I enjoy and see where it takes me. I am open to trying new things all the time, so I will carry on doing that until I find the life path I want to follow.
