What is the name of the company you work for and what do they do?
The Walt Disney Company. It is a media company which have different divisions including Disney Parks and Resorts, Walt Disney Studios, Disney Consumer Product and Interactive Media and many more. It also owns ABC Channel and ESPN.
What is your role within the company?
I work as a Finance Intern in the Disney Interactive department. My role is to provide variance analysis across different LOB, support on issues and queries encountered by regional Casual Buyers and Support Finance Manager with ad- hoc projects, and analysis as required.
Can you please give me an insight into a typical day?
First thing that I do when I get in to work is checking emails and answering to those that I am able to. Then we have a team catch up to discuss about tasks to prioritise. In the morning, I will be running different reports. After having a lunch break with interns from different floors, I will be analysing numbers and sending email to different stakeholders. In between work, I will take a break and talk to other people as well.
What do you enjoy the most and do you get involved in any interesting projects?
I enjoyed answering queries from different markets in my work. I like digging down the numbers and analyse the figures to provide variance analysis against Forecast to stakeholders. By answering to different queries, I was able to understand the local market's performance.
Why did you want to undertake a year in industry?
The main reason is to prepare myself with more experience in the Finance sector before graduating. I believe that undertaking a placement will provide me with a head start in this sector. It also helps with the networking where I get to know more people across the business and also other interns.
What do you think you have got out of this experience so far?
I have learnt so much even though I've only joined the company for 3 months. I have been involved in the Forecasting process, Closing process and AOP process. Everyday is different and I have been building relationships with people across EMEA and US within the business. There are always new things to learn and new people to meet everyday.
Do you have any tips and advice to current students thinking of undertaking a year in industry?
Placement opportunity is competitive and it is better to apply early. You might feel frustrated after rejections from different companies, but it is well worth the hard work.
