Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology

Tribology of Friction Brakes

Tribology of Friction Brakes

Friday 8 September 2023, 9am–4.30pm, University of Leeds

This workshop will consider all aspects of the tribology of frictional braking interfaces for both road and rail vehicles. Of particular concern will be the study of airborne wear emissions from such interfaces, as these emissions are potentially harmful to human health and will be the subject of future legislation including the current Euro7 proposals. Means of measuring and reducing these emissions will be considered, especially the use of coated ferrous and non-ferrous materials to replace the current uncoated cast iron brake rotor. Due account will be taken of the effects of different interface conditions such as contact pressure, sliding speed and temperature, as well as the effect of corrosion on both the pad and rotor materials. As well as invited talks and presentations based on submitted abstracts, opportunities will be given for delegates to view the brakes test facilities at the University of Leeds. The workshop will be of interest to brakes engineers and tribologists as well as materials and environmental scientists.
