Why did you decide to study at the University of Leeds?

I choose Leeds as its courses have great practical work that’s complemented with the theory making the transition to working in larger project more enjoyable. Such as internships and working for industry.

What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University and why?

I enjoy both Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, my course takes a split of both degrees modules.

I have just finished my first year, my favourite project within my course so far has been engineering a remote-controlled buggy with sensors to drives its self, I also developed an app within Unity to control the buggy. This project brought both Computing and Electronics together that I found exciting to make from scratch.

Tell us about your summer internship.

Undergraduate internships give the students the opportunity to apply their relevant skills for their chosen research and development career. It also gives them a chance to work on a long-lasting project.

My projects aim is to create a game in The Unity Game Engine, in conjunction with the MyPAM Rehabilitation Robot. It will aid patients in their Rehabilitation for strokes and cerebral palsy. The game will provide a way for patients to track their progress and be more involved in the recovery process. This gives the user more motivation to continue their rehibition. The MyPAM Robot will initially assist the patients to complete the games.

I have overseen another student giving them objectives and tasks to undergo in the completion of the game. As well as working along side them with the development. It’s fascinating been able to take part in a project that will go towards research to eventually help someone who would need rehab. To know that one day someone might be playing a game I made to aid in their rehab is good to know.

What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?

Leeds is a great city, with plenty of freedom to explore and enjoy yourself. From having a over whelming about of pubs/bars to parks to clear your mind. I enjoy running along the canal and night life within the city.

What are your ambitions for the future/what are you going on to do next?

I would like to continue my career with Electronic and Computer Engineering going on to finish after doing a Masters. My hope is to work on embedder systems or doing something higher level with Unity Game Engine as I enjoy doing both.

Next summer I plan to work on the Rehabilitation Robot again.

What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?

Doing a summer internship this year and the last has given me more knowledge of how larger projects are dealt with. From this I understand how to approach other project by bringing new ideas, planning and development techniques. I have also gained leadership and team working skills within this summer.

What would you say to students coming to do the same course?

Make sure to explore other societies and get to know other fellow students on your course as you will become friends for most of your degree. If you are struggling with any course content or any other personal issue, make sure you contact the student support office and your personal tutor, as they are extremely nice and useful.
