Jocelyn Chee studies Financial Mathematics BSc and has enjoyed the content of the modules as they are related to applications of mathematics in real life

Choosing Leeds

Jocelyn enjoyed studying maths at school and was the subject she scored the highest. She said, “To me, maths is a subject which is understandable and makes sense in reality”

“I was looking for a university with a huge campus, situated in or fairly near to the city centre, has a lot of well-maintained facilities, an active student union and a good reputation.

I was also looking for a city that has a lot to do but is not too busy and crowded, good security, a lower cost of living and convenient transportation. The University of Leeds happened to tick off all the requirements that I have been looking for!”

All the staff are very nice, friendly, helpful and efficient. The lecturers always seem to be very enthusiastic about the aspect of mathematics they are teaching.

While at Leeds Jocelyn has enjoyed the fact that the content of the modules in the course are related to applications of mathematics in real life. She said “Because of this, I feel more intrigued to go on learning and I feel eager to attend lectures and seminars. I find financial mathematics to be the most interesting module for me because it is about the application of mathematics to financial problems.

All the staff are very nice, friendly, helpful and efficient. The lecturers always seem to be very enthusiastic about the aspect of mathematics they are teaching.

My personal tutor is awesome. He is a good listener and a good advice-giver. He gives me additional information that I need to know as well.”

Student life

Leeds is one of the country's largest and fastest-growing cities and our campus is just a 10-minute walk from the vibrant city centre. When asked about living in Leeds Jocelyn said “Leeds is a vibrant city. There are a wide range of restaurants you can dine at, and a wide range of fashion boutiques from the high-end stores to the local vintage stores. Since Leeds is a big city, many popular musicians tend to come to the First Direct Arena or the O2 Academy as well.

Outside of contact hours, you have a choice of doing revision or to participate in clubs and societies. There is so much to do, especially in the Union. There is always something for everyone no matter how odd your hobbies may be. As for me, I love yoga and meditation. I spend an hour every day during my free time attending yoga class at the gym. It helps me to relax, empty my mind and make me feel energized throughout the day.”

She continued “I am a member of the Photography Society, Archery Club and Mathematics Society. It was a great opportunity for me to make new friends from other countries, other courses as well as people of different ages.

The Photography Society is my favourite so far because they plan a lot of photography seminar and trips. It feels great to make friends with similar interests.”

Future students

When asked what she would say to future students, Jocelyn Chee sad “It is important to stay focused from the start of the course or else it will be really difficult to catch up on everything last minute right before the exams.”
