Janice Wu

Janice Wu studies Mathematics and Statistics BSc and has so far found the best aspect of maths to be able to train her brain and make her think logically.

Choosing Leeds

After enjoying studying maths at high school, Janice wanted to continue her studies and chose Leeds to widen her knowledge. She said “As I attended the Open Day before, I found that the campus is very concentrated and beautiful, and I am really interested in the course. I really enjoyed doing maths during high school, and I want to continue discovering my interests about maths.”

Maths at Leeds

The School of Mathematics is globally renowned for its teaching, research and engagement with industry and government. Janice said “I think the best aspect of studying Maths is it can train your brain and make you think logically. Because Maths is mainly about logic and doing Maths everyday can influenced you unconsciously to think logically. We have done some mini projects about computing languages, such as R and Python, and we have also done some projects with Excel.”

Student life

Leeds is one of the country's largest and fastest-growing cities and our campus is just a 10-minute walk from the vibrant city centre. Janice said “Leeds is a small city compared to London and not very busy, so it is suitable for studying. And the shopping centre is concentrated and not far from the University, which is very convenient for students to get what they want.”

Looking forward 

The university has the employment team which can help us with our future careers such as giving suggestions about writing CVs.

Throughout your time at the university, our dedicated Faculty Employability Team will be there to support, guide and advise you. Janice said “The university often offers career fairs, which can provide us a great opportunity to talk to the companies’ interviewer face-to-face. Also, the university has the employment team which can help us with our future careers such as giving suggestions about writing CVs.

My ambition for the future is to be able to apply what I have learned in the university in my future career.”

Future students 

We asked Janice what advice she would give to future students. She said “I would say try your best to do preview and summary of lectures, and always talk to your personal tutor if you have any problems, and join societies to enrich your life.”
