Why did you decide to study for an MSc in Mathematics?

During my undergraduate degree I fell in love with maths and decided to pursue a career in academia; I felt like a taught postgraduate degree would be an appropriate way to cement my mathematical knowledge and standing before applying for a PhD.

Why did you choose the University of Leeds?

Leeds is my hometown, but besides that I knew that the University of Leeds has a well-renowned mathematics department, with much of its research considered "world-leading". I'd also heard good things about the University from my sister, a Communications alumna.

What are you enjoying most about your course?

Probably my Philosophy of Mathematics module; it's given me several new ways of thinking both within and about mathematics. I hadn't taken any philosophy before, but have a newfound appreciation for it now.

How have you found the quality of the teaching?

Very good; the lecturers really know their stuff and always make themselves available to students when they can. There are plenty of resources provided too.

What are your ambitions for the future?

After my MSc, I hope to take on a PhD – preferably at Leeds again!

What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?

Leeds has a thriving cultural scene, with several concert venues (First Direct Arena, Brudenell Social Club, O2 Academy Leeds), festivals (Leeds Independent Film Festival, Leeds Indie Food, Leeds Pride), and art galleries (The Tetley, Henry Moore Institute, Yorkshire Sculpture Park) to be found in or nearby the city. Leeds champions independent food too – personal favourite examples of mine are The Cat's Pyjamas, Café Moor, and Whites. 

What would you say to anyone considering this course?

That you won't regret it. Leeds is an amazing city and the University offers so much to its students, in terms of the degree itself, career opportunities, and help (should you need it) in your studies.

How do you find the facilities here compared to where you previously studied?

Leeds has a much better campus and student union and lectures are always recorded and made available online for students' convenience.

What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?

I'd say volunteering as a Course Representative has helped me be more confident when speaking with staff or addressing groups of people. I feel like I've also gotten a better understanding of how a university career "works".
