Calum Hawcroft studied MPhys, BSc Physics with Astrophysics at the University of Leeds

Calum Hawcroft

Why did you choose to study at the University of Leeds?

The facilities at the University of Leeds were far better than those at other universities I had been to visit. I was impressed by the facilities in the School of Physics and Astronomy and also at the University in general.

Why did you choose to study physics with astrophysics?

It was my love of physics and astronomy that led me to choose this degree. It's important to study something you really enjoy at university, as it's three or four years of your life!

What do you like most about your course?

The lecturers on my course are fantastic, and I really enjoy all of the astrophysics modules I'm studying.

There's such an involvement in societies on my course too, so it really does feel like I'm part of a community.

What skills have you gained from your course so far?

My communication, team-work, leadership and problem solving skills have all been enhanced as a result of me studying this course, which will really help me in the future.

Can you describe what student life at Leeds is like (perhaps a typical day)?

I spend most of my daytimes studying and doing work. I vary between working from my accommodation or coming onto campus and using one of the many libraries here, depending on if I have a lecture or not.

On an evening, I like to go to planned activities by the Physics Society, play rugby and I'm also involved with the Leeds Student Radio.

I've always got lots to do as I'm really involved with university life. I'm also a student ambassador for the School of Physics and Astronomy, so I help out at events such as Open Days.

What do you like most about being a student?

There is so much freedom being a student. I've got to meet some amazing people on my student journey so far and I've made some great friends.

Being a student also opens up the opportunity to travel.

What do you plan to do at the end of your course?

I want to continue studying so I'm going to do a PhD. I also want to go travelling and see the world.
