Civil Engineering with Project Management MEng, BEng
Overview
The Civil Engineering with Project Management course offers you a firm grounding across the breadth of civil engineering, with a focus on the unique project management challenges posed by major building and infrastructure development.
You’ll gain an understanding of the technologies and tools available to civil engineers and cover key topics in the Project Management Body of Knowledge. You’ll choose from optional modules to develop specialist knowledge in topics ranging from transport engineering to the design of structures in earthquake zones. But you’ll also gain an understanding of project management to prepare you for a wide range of careers.
You can choose to take either the four-year Integrated Masters (MEng, BEng) or the three-year Bachelor’s (BEng) degree on this course.

Specialist facilities
The Faculty of Engineering is continually investing in world-class facilities, and you’ll have access to excellent lab facilities, design studio and computing equipment. We also have specialist lab space for structures, materials, public health engineering, building services and geotechnics.
Accreditation
This course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) of The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE), The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. The JBM works with and advises universities to ensure that their degree programmes help to develop professional engineers that will continue to provide a global contribution to sustainable and economic growth whilst maintaining the highest ethical standards.
Accreditation is the assurance that a university course meets the quality standards established by the profession for which it prepares its students. An accredited civil engineering course must meet the quality standards set by the JBM. The University of Leeds is proud to be one of a small number of UK universities to have formed a working partnership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). This partnership helps those students who aspire to become professionally qualified civil engineers (CEng, MICE) to have the best possible start to their civil engineering careers.
The MEng, BEng is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer.
The BEng course is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), and partially satisfying the educational base for Chartered Engineer status (CEng). A course of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng.

The accreditation by JBM also means that the programme is EUR-ACE labelled. This means that it meets the framework standards and guidelines of EUR-ACE and the accreditation is recognized in Europe and beyond.

Course content
All degree courses within the School share a common first year of six compulsory modules. These expose you to the diversity within civil engineering and provide a firm basis on which to specialise in later years – as well as giving you the flexibility to switch between these courses.
In the first two years, you’ll gain an understanding of the materials and methods available to civil engineers in different contexts, as well as the basic principles of project management. You’ll build skills in structural design and analysis, learn about the properties of a wide range of materials and take part in project work to deepen your understanding. A choice of optional modules in Year 2 will allow you to develop your interests and decide what you might focus on in later years.
Year 3 involves a wider selection of optional modules, allowing you to gain specialist knowledge in fields such as building physics, railway and transport engineering. Core modules will also cover fundamental areas like foundation and water engineering, and you’ll explore techniques for managing time, cost and quality in projects and allow you to complete a substantial research project. Alternatively, if you take the MEng course you can choose to spend this year at one of our many partner institutions in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore or USA.
If you do take the MEng course you’ll continue your studies into Year 4, where you’ll contribute to the body of knowledge in a chosen field when you complete an independent research project. At the same time, you’ll deepen your knowledge of project management, and choose from masters-level optional modules on topics ranging from designing structures in earthquake zones to strategic management in construction.
Projects
Civil engineers work on projects that combine skills and knowledge to deliver a solution to a client, so we place a strong emphasis on project work throughout the degree. This gives you the opportunity to explore your subject further as well as developing valuable skills in problem solving, design, project management, communication and teamwork.

Learning and teaching
You’ll benefit from our integrated style of learning and teaching. Laboratory classes, project work, and industry sponsored fieldwork allow you to gain hands-on experience investigating and applying material from your lectures and tutorials to real life work situations. For example, if you choose the Constructionarium (Construction Site Fieldcourse module), you’ll apply your knowledge to build replicas of iconic structures.
All our courses are supported by world-leading blended learning technology, using online resources to help you develop your knowledge at your own pace. Our state of the art lecture recording system ensures your lectures will be available for you to review at a convenient time. Our learning and teaching resources will equip you with in-depth knowledge and key practical skills that will put you in an ideal position to compete in science and technology-related careers.
We organise industrial visits and offer additional seminars delivered by practising engineers, researchers and other professionals. Our close links with industry also mean that you have direct contact with industry and potential employers from an early stage in your course. Each student will be allocated an industrial tutor who will provide opportunities to experience Civil Engineering working environments on and off site
Our personal tutorial system will provide academic and pastoral support. You will have a designated personal tutor throughout your studies at Leeds. He or she will be an academic member of staff: you will have weekly academic tutorials with your tutor throughout your first year, in your tutor group (of typically 5-7 students), as well as one-to-one meetings twice per semester.
On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.
Assessment
You will be assessed through both written examinations, held at the end of each year, and through coursework in the form of reports, projects, presentations and posters.
Entry requirements, fees and applying
Entry requirements
A-level: AAA including Mathematics.
Where an A-Level Science subject is taken, we require a pass in the practical science element, alongside the achievement of the A-Level at the stated grade.
Excludes A-Level General Studies and Critical Thinking.
Extended Project Qualification - We recognise the value, effort and enthusiasm applicants make in the Extended Project, and where an applicant offers an A in the EPQ we may make an offer of AAB at A-Level (any required subjects such as Mathematics must still be at grade A).
All applicants must be studying Mathematics at level 3. For most students, this requirement is fulfilled by achieving the required grade in A-level Maths. Applicants for whom this requirement is to be fulfilled via qualifications other than A-levels (eg BTEC Maths and Additional/Further Maths modules) may be required to take a diagnostic Maths test in addition to their other level 3 maths studies. This is to ensure a suitable level of mathematical literacy.
GCSE: English Language at grade C (4) or above, or an appropriate English language qualification.

Pass 60 credits overall with 45 credits at Level 3, 30 credits with Distinction (including an appropriate number of Mathematics modules) and the remaining 15 credits with Merit or above.

D*D*D* with Distinctions in all Mathematics units plus an interview and diagnostic Maths test. Mathematics units must usually include Further Maths and/or other appropriate Maths units. Some may be optional on your BTEC but are required by the Faculty. Please contact us for further information.

If you do not have the formal qualifications for immediate entry to one of our degrees, you may be able to progress through a foundation year. Applicant days
Suitable applicants will be invited to an applicant day, which is not mandatory, but for which we strongly encourage attendance, as this gives you the opportunity to meet our students, academic and admissions staff, and find out more about your course. You will be given a tour of the School’s facilities, which includes our laboratories and design studios. There will also be the opportunity to attend a talk from our Employability team.
During the day you’ll have an informal interview with an academic member of staff, to check that it’s the right course for you and your career plans, have your questions answered and find out more about studying at Leeds.
After you apply we will send you a link to book your place on the applicant day, but please let us know as soon as possible if you cannot attend, so your place can be allocated to another applicant.
If the entry requirements for your qualification state the need for a diagnostic Mathematics test, then please note that attendance at this day is required.

Tuition fees for UK undergraduate students starting in 2024/25
Tuition fees for UK full-time undergraduate students are set by the UK Government and will be £9,250 for students starting in 2024/25.
The fee may increase in future years of your course in line with inflation only, as a consequence of future changes in Government legislation and as permitted by law.

Career opportunities
As with all our courses, there is strong demand for our graduates. When you graduate, you are very likely to find employment in the core contracting and consulting arms of the UK’s £30bn per annum civil engineering industry. Careers support
You’ll have access to our dedicated Employability team, located centrally in our Employability Suite, who will provide you with specialist face-to-face support and advice to help you find relevant work experience, internships and year-in-industry placements, as well as graduate positions.

Study abroad
On this course you have the opportunity to spend the third year of your MEng at a university abroad to give you a different cultural perspective on your studies.
We have links with a number of partner universities overseas which means your study abroad year will be integrated into your degree and will not require you to take a year out. You may choose to study at universities in the USA, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Work placements
With the help and support of our faculty Employability Team, you can choose to undertake an industrial placement year at one of the 100+ companies that we work with. If you decide to undertake a placement year this will extend your period of study by 12 months and, on successful completion, you will be awarded the ‘industrial’ variant in your degree title to demonstrate your added experience to future employers.
