Thomas Pickard

I completed an MSc in Data Science & Analytics at Leeds in 2020 as a mature student, after spending more than 10 years working in analytics and data management in Financial Services. Since then, I’ve remained at the University in the position of Research Fellow.

I’m a member of the Artifical Intelligence for Language (AI4L) research group led by Eric Atwell, part of the Artificial Intelligence research theme in the School of Computing.

Research interests

My current research project is EDUBOTS, an EU-funded collaboration between partners in the tech industry and several higher education institutions across Europe. We’re looking for ways to identify, gather and disseminate best practice around the use of AI chatbots and online communication platforms in education – what do these tools and their users need in order to help generate the best outcomes for students, educators and Higher Education institutions?

In addition to trialling specific tools and platforms, we’re hoping to learn from and link in with Leeds’ digital strategy, and would love to hear from teaching staff and students who have experience (good or bad!) of using AI and chatbots as part of their learning or wider university experience.
