- Thesis title: Turbidity current dynamics and submarine channel development
PhD student in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Fluid Dynamics and member of the Turbidites Research Group (TRG). After graduating from the University of Edinburgh with an MPhys in Mathematical Physics, I am now working towards the completion of my PhD in the area of fluid dynamics.
My primary area of research is geophysical and environmental fluid dynamics, currently focussing on the characteristics and dynamics of gravity currents. A subtype of these, turbidity currents, form the heart of my PhD research. I am interested in just how these currents can travel for 1000s of km along the ocean floor and the mechanisms via which they form vast systems of seafloor channels known as submarine fans.
I utilise both state of the art experimental technology in the Sorby Environmental Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to model these flows. The combinination of these two approaches allows a more thorough understanding of these complex currents and is one of the main driving forces behind my research.
