What have you been doing since finishing your studies? What are you doing in terms of your career?
I am working as a consultant at Deloitte Consulting in Germany. Deloitte is one of the “Big Four” international operating professional services for Audit, Tax, Corporate Finance and Consulting.
Please can you explain why you chose to do a Masters?
In my undergraduate studies, I graduated with a BSc in Business Information Systems in Germany. During my studies, I focused on Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing. The subject areas can be described as the systematic analysis and processing of raw data to transform into useful information and provide an insight for businesses to support the decision-making process for business management and users. Having an interdisciplinary degree in Business and IT, I really enjoyed how IT tools and methods can be used to support business processes.
After I finished my degree, I joined Deloitte as a Business Analyst with specialisation in Information Management and Business Intelligence and later promoted as Consultant, I worked for 2 and half years. I was always interested in learning new things and developing my technical skills. Therefore, I chose to take a sabbatical and do an MSc in Advanced Computer Science with the focus on data analytics. I am interested in data analytics personally, and the MSc helped me for my professional career as a Business Intelligence Consultant. My employer supported my wish and enabled me to pursue the MSc.
What company are you working for, what is your role and what does it involve?
I work for Deloitte Consulting GmbH in Germany as Consultant specialised in Information Management and Business Intelligence.
In my current role as Consultant I am involved in conceptional work such as writing business proposals for the implementation of a Big Data platform to name one example. I am also involved with technical implementations of management reporting platforms for clients of various industries. In my role, I have to support the process from identifying the business requirement up to the development.
What experiences at Leeds do you think have particularly helped with your career/will help with your future career?
The taught modules are definitely relevant for my career as its forms a solid foundation to develop further knowledge in order to advise my clients. Also, during my MSc Project I could choose a project I was interested. By using new technologies and applying methods of machine learning, text analytics and natural language processing, I could not only learn something new but also apply my knowledge in a real project environment.
Looking back, why did you choose to study your particular course and why did you choose the University of Leeds?
The University of Leeds is a great and reputable university in terms of teaching, research and offering vast opportunities for extracurricular activities for students. I chose the University of Leeds due to my interest in Data/ Text Analytics and the research activities in this area. Also, the choice of taught modules was a key driver for my decision. The modules Data Mining, Machine Learning, Semantic Web and Applications and Cloud Computing interested me most.
What was the best aspect of the course/the University and why? Any highlights?
The support and feedback provided by the professors and the teaching staff was throughout very helpful. The lecturers were enthusiastic about their subjects and provided also individual help during lectures and practical sessions. But at the same time they will push you to show your best.
