Why did you choose to study Architectural Engineering at Leeds?

I chose to study Architectural Engineering because I wanted to be able to combine my interests in architecture and engineering. I found that I enjoyed both Art and Maths equally at school and I wanted to be able to combine the two to make the most of what I enjoy and what I am good at.

I chose Leeds after visiting on both the Open Day and Applicant Day. I found that the staff were really helpful and I really liked the friendly atmosphere. It felt easy to approach staff and students. I also really like how the University of Leeds campus is part of the city and the buzzing student atmosphere it creates, everything on campus is so close by and there’s a friendly and close-knit community.

What's the best aspect of your course?

The best aspect of studying at Leeds is the support and guidance that is available to you. I have found that whenever I have had a problem there has also been someone to talk to. The level of expertise and knowledge that the lecturers have is the best aspect of studying at Leeds. I have also found that at Leeds, student’s opinions are listened to and taken on board which makes me feel like a valued member of the Leeds community.

Did you enjoy studying abroad?

As part of my course, I went to Drexel University in Philadelphia. I spent 9 months there and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I made the most of exploring the city and different parts of the country. Philadelphia is a city filled lots of history and different cultures. I made lots of friends and was able to be part of the American culture.

I have learnt a lot about myself from the study abroad experience . I have learnt that I can be independent and really outgoing. The experience definitely opened my eyes and I think I am more open minded about new challenges and situations now. My confidence in approaching new people and making friends has definitely improved too.

I would recommend study abroad to anyone, as it is a great opportunity to go and explore and put yourself out there in the world. It’s the perfect opportunity to combine studying and meeting new people from different cultures. The experience as a whole will make you a more rounded person and you never know what opportunities will be available to you in the future from going abroad.

What are your plans for the future?

My ambitions for the future are to hopefully gain my chartership with either IStructE or ICE. I would also be open to working abroad in different countries. The experience I have gained through my degree at Leeds have set me up for my future career by helping to me to learn and develop communication skills, working knowledge of engineering and team working skills. The architectural and integrated design projects have especially given me some experience of what it will be like to work in industry and also the skills that I will need to succeed.
