Jessica Watson

Jessica graduated from the University of Leeds in 2017 with a MChem, BSc degree in Chemistry. She now works as a Pricing Consultant at NFU Mutual.

Undergraduate life at Leeds

Jessica chose to study Chemistry because it was her favourite subject at A-Levels. For her, it was a very easy choice to continue studying Chemistry at university level. Jessica added, “When I visited the University of Leeds, I loved the flexibility in the course which was great as I wasn’t certain exactly where I wanted my degree to take me. I also love the city and it was obvious when I came to my interview that the University were really keen to support my sporting commitments alongside my degree which is something that was really important to me.

The best part of the course was the practical aspect – 9 hours of labs a week really makes the theory learnt in lectures more relevant. The course was really challenging, but  also rewarding which has made it highly enjoyable. A typical day will usually take one of two forms; one where you are in labs, which is pretty full on as its hands on rather than listening to a lecturer. On other days you’ll have 3 or 4 lectures usually interspersed with a bit of down time.”

Student life

“Student life was better than I expected it would be. Even living in the Oxley Residences, which is furthest away from campus, there’s so much to get involved with socially and so many opportunities to mix with so many different types of people. I also play cricket at a national level, so most of the time I was juggling my academic and sporting commitments without them intervening with each other too much. Occasionally due to training commitments or tours I did have to miss contact time at uni, but the support I received from the School of Chemistry has been invaluable and it would have been a real struggle without it.”
