What attracted you to the University of Leeds?

I always wanted to come to a large city, and I have siblings who attended university here. I’ve got a lot of friends in years above me who attended this university and I’ve always heard good things.

Did you visit us on an open day? Did you find that experience helpful in making your decision?

I came for an interview, and it did. The lab facilities in particular here stood out for me compared to other universities I visited.

Has your course lived up to your expectations so far?

Yes. It is challenging every day, yet the staff in the school always make it enjoyable. I never fail to get a sense of satisfaction when I complete my work.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

The lab work. I love practical work and find it the best way to learn about chemistry, seeing the academia in action.

Which aspect of Chemistry do you find the most interesting?

I find Physical chemistry fascinating. This is because it is such an area of unknown in Chemistry where a lot of the discoveries have happened in the 20th century onwards. There is still so much left for us to discover.

How would you describe your lecturers and tutors?

They are both enthusiastic about the subject and approachable. They always have time for you, whether the issue is academic or not.

Can you explain a day in the life of a Chemistry student?

The days of a chemistry student differ. They can range from an intense day spent in the lab, but at the end of it you feel a sense of satisfaction upon the completion of your experiment, to a day spent in lecture theatres learning about a range of aspects of chemistry.

Have you joined any clubs and societies on campus?

I’m part of ChemSoc and the social secretary for the society in this academic year. I’ve organised many socials with discounted entry to clubs and on meals out.

Are there a lot of things to do and get involved with in the city?

There is so much to do in the city, from clubbing, to sport, to drama. There’s something for everybody. 

Do you have an idea of what you might like to do at the end of your course?

I would like to venture into the world of business/marketing. I want to use the employability gained from my course with the transferable skills I’ve picked up along the way.

What would you say to anyone thinking of applying to your course?

Be prepared to work hard, otherwise you can struggle, but the reward at the end is hugely fulfilling.
