Dr Faye Esat

Profile

As x-ray crystallography is fundamental in our understanding of many scientific fields, I am privileged to be able to carry out research that directly contributes to the development and characterisation of a breadth of material systems such as: biomaterials, energy storage, functional materials, failure analysis, semiconductors and future telecommunications. It is rewarding to work on projects that directly impact our lives, the future world and policy.

As X-Ray Diffraction Facility Manager, I am passionate about ensuring our advanced x-ray diffraction techniques are cutting-edge whilst being accessible to academic researchers, industry and the wider community as well as training the next generation of analytical scientists. I am also passionately involved in STEM Outreach Activities and support Girls in Science

Responsibilities

  • Facility Manager, X-Ray Diffraction Facility
  • Senior Experimental Officer, X-ray Diffraction
  • Research within the Bragg Centre for Materials Research

Research interests

Through x-ray diffraction techniques and crystallography, I love to access and explore materials atomic structure, so we can unlock the secrets that allow us to better exploit materials and devices to their full potential.

My current research activities are focussed on experimental science, materials characterisation and particularly the development of non-ambient x-ray diffraction analytical techniques and interpretation. My research interests are focused around developing and understanding a wide variety of materials systems for applications in: energy storage, thin films/coatings, corrosion, pharmaceuticals, tribology, biomaterials and functional materials.

This work is delivered through independent research and the X-Ray Diffraction Facility which is based in the Bragg Centre for Materials Research at the University of Leeds and is a founding partner of the Henry Royce National Institute for Advanced Materials Research and Innovation in the UK.
