Why did you decide to study at the University of Leeds?

Since elementary school, maths and science have been my favourite subjects. Then, during high school, I enjoyed learning maths, physics and chemistry so much. Fascinated by how the theories learnt in class can be applied in the daily life has led me to discover engineering. With the knowledge that I learned, I hoped I would be able to contribute to the community by trying to improve on our daily life. Studying in the UK is one of my childhood dreams. Keen of treasuring more about chemical engineering, I found the University of Leeds serves the best place for me to pursue my study.

What has been the best aspect of studying here?

Throughout my time in the University of Leeds, I've realised that the learning system is very systematic and well organised. In the first year, students have more learning hours in class. When you go to a higher level, the number of lectures reduces and we are encouraged to have more time for self-study. This approach prepares students for real situations after they graduate.

Personally, I am so thankful to be able to seek knowledge from the lecturers in the University of Leeds. They are very professional and experienced in their own field. Another aspect that I consider to be very good is that there is a large community of international students on my course, which I can make friends with and learn something new from each of them.

Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed so far?

During my third year, I have completed a mini design project about detergent processing. It was a group project, where we had to work on designing a small plant that produces detergent through a process called spray drying. Working in a group can be quite challenging at times but all of your hard work will pay off.

What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?

For me, Leeds is the best place to study. With its calm and peaceful environment, Leeds can be considered as one of the safest places to live. The living cost in Leeds is quite cheap compared to other places in the UK, and this gives an advantage for the students. I am so in love with Leeds city, it is lovely.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I am hoping that I will be able to use the knowledge and experience I’ve gained at the University of Leeds to become a better person – for myself, my family and my country. I want to be an engineer that can help others in improving their life, in any way that is possible.

What would you say to students coming to do the same course?

Congratulations guys. You have come to this phase of your life. Appreciate it and make full use of this chance. Study smart, play hard. If you don’t understand anything in class, don’t hesitate to ask questions. Clarify things as fast as possible and don’t procrastinate in understanding the things you learn. Don’t be too stressed, you must learn to relax. Build as many friendships and connections as possible – it will help you in the future.
