Ms Jill Tushingham

My background is from within the aviation industry, rather than academia, and I am in the privileged position of having graduated from the Aviation Technology degree course, here at the University of Leeds, in 2009, so have experienced the course from both sides of the lecture theatre!

Following a career in both teaching and the travel and tourism industry, I bought the oldest aeroplane club in England in 1990, The Yorkshire Aeroplane Club, based at Leeds Bradford Airport. During my 10 years of ownership I developed the Club from an ab-initio flight training club to a full commercial flight training facility, employing 8 full-time instructors, with a fleet of 7 single-engine aircraft, a multi-engine aircraft and a helicopter training facility in-house.

During my time at the Yorkshire Aeroplane Club I attained my Multi-engine rating, my Commercial Pilot Licence and my Flight Instructor rating.

Following the sale of the Club in 2000, I continued with some part-time flight instruction, then, in 2006, took the leap of returning into full-time education and enrolled onto the Aviation Technology and Management degree at Leeds. 1 week after my final exam, I started working on the course as the Flight Training Manager, responsible for getting the Level 1 students through their CAA PPL examinations and their Flight Training during the summer holidays.

6 years later, I am the Head of Programme for Aviation Technology and am as enthusiastic about the degree course as ever, with the strong wish to make sure that each of our students has a very positive 3 years with us, make life-long friendships, continues into their chosen career as efficiently as possible after graduation and are proud to be alumni of the University of Leeds.
